The Dewayo (or Dwayyo) is reported to be a mammalian biped with features similar to a wolf, but the stance and stature of a human. The sightings of Dewayo are primarily reported in West Middletown, Maryland, but sightings have also been reported in the Wolfsville, Maryland region. The Dewayo and the Snallygaster have reportedly had vicious encounters dating back to early settlement of the Middletown valley.

Common Sightings

The Dewayo has had several sightings over the years but the most common always depict something similar Werewolf or Dogman. One of the first to give a detailed description came from a man who wanted to remain anonymous and told his story to the local papers under the name John Becker. Becker claimed that, in 1965, the creature attacked him and looked like a large wolf but walked like a man. A year late another man saw the Dewayo and stated that its legs stuck out from its side and it scuttled like a spider.

Most Dewayo sightings began around the 1920s and 30s however the legend of the creature actually reaches way back to the 1700s. The Dutch which had settled the region brought with them the tale of the Hexenwolf The Hexenwolf has strong roots in old German folklore and some suspect it might be one of the possible progenitors for what we think of as Werewolves today. The Dewayo appears to have been a response to the fear of the Schneller Geist or Snallygaster .  The Dutch settlers feared the Snallygaster and looked to the Dewayo as sort of protection against it. Even went so far to put up hex signs on barn doors. The signs supposedly marked the Dewayo and kept the Snallygaster away.
