Modern Sightings are sightings that occurred after the post-classical era (known as the Middle Ages). The modern era officially began in the 16th century (1500s), however, for zoology, the timeline for the start of the modern zoological era was Conrad Gesner, the founder of the science zoology and inventor of the pencil.

Conrad Gesner

Conrad Gesner was a doctor and professor at the Carolinum, and the precursor of the University of Zurich. His five-volume Historiae animalium (1551–1558) is considered the beginning of modern zoology.

His book is the first modern zoological work that attempts to describe all the animals known, and the first bibliography of natural history writings. The five volumes of natural history of animals consists of more than 4500 pages. It also is the first book with fossil Illustrations.

The flowering plant genus Gesneria and its family Gesneriaceae are named after him. A genus of moths is also named Gesneria after him. So, the start of all modern sightings for Cryptid wiki must be post 1551.

Etymology

Bigfoot Sightings

According to the Cambridge Dictionary, a sighting is an occasion when an observer see something or someone, especially that is rare or trying to hide.

From the Oxford English Dictionary, sighting is defined as The action of looking, catching sight of, inspecting or examining, etc. Also, an instance of catching sight (esp. of something rare or unusual). In 1955, the Oxford dictionary officially alluded to cryptozoology with the caption:

"W. Girvan Flying Saucers & Common Sense i. 13 It was not long before sightings were being reported elsewhere than in Scandinavia."
The dictionary uses a modified example of this reference in there dictionaries today. The example from their U.K. English dictionary:
"The reported sightings of a UFO near a Suffolk airbase."

Usage

Modern sightings include, but are not limited to cryptids, paranormal encounters, unexplained phenomena, rare organisms/peoples, and artwork/texts.

For cryptid wiki, articles should contain modern sightings from 1500s to present.
